The Mamluks founded the city in the 14th century and remained almost unchanged throughout Ottoman rule. But it flourished at the end of that period and before the British Mandate on Palestine, specifically in 1917. It was administratively annexed to Egypt with the rest of the cities of the Gaza Strip in 1948, It was occupied by Israel in 1967 and remained under occupation until 1995, after which it became the center of the Khan Yunis governorate of the Palestinian National Authority. The city is an administrative and educational center for the southern Gaza Strip, where many government departments are concentrated, and dozens of schools for all levels of boys and girls
