Al Maghazi

About the Municipality

A local committee was formed in 1978, then it became a village council in 1987. In 1996, the municipality became part of the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Local Government, both administratively and technically. The municipality started its work with limited activity, limited to cleanliness, drinking water and following up the electricity issues in the camp. In January 2005, the municipal elections took place in the Maghazi refugee camp where 48 candidates and candidates, including 7 sisters, competed. The elections were fair. Democracy was beautiful and the winning brothers and sisters were received in early February 2005: eleven men and two women.

About the City

Al-Maghazi was founded in 1949 as a refugee camp on 295 dunums of land belonging to the Al-Masdar family and Abu Azid family. The camp accommodates 9,000 refugees who were forced to leave their homes in central and southern Palestine after the 1948 war. At first, the refugees lived in al-Maghazi al-Khayyam camp and from small mud-brick houses that were covered with bricks and supervised the camp and the services provided by UNRWA at the time. At the time, the Gaza Strip was under Egyptian administration until the 1967 war. The Gaza Strip was occupied by the Israeli side and the Maghazi was part of that. The Maghazi refugee camp was expanded horizontally due to the increase in population to this day. Al-Maghazi is located in the center of the Gaza Strip within the central governorate, and is 14 km away from Gaza City. It is located on the eastern side of the main street of the Gaza Strip. Salah El-Din Street is bordered to the north by Al-Bureij Camp, to the east by the Green Line.
