Continued Services of Solid Waste Collection and Transferring by JSC KRM within the Emergency Solid Waste Management Response Program in Southern Gaza Strip

The Joint Council for Solid Waste Management in Khan Younis, Rafah, and the Middle Governorates continues its efforts to provide solid waste collection and transferring services in the southern governorates within the Emergency Solid Waste Management Response Program in Southern Gaza Strip. This program is implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP/PAPP) and funded by the United Nations oPt Humanitarian Fund, as part of the efforts to mitigate the environmental crisis caused by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
As of mid-September, around 33,000 tons of waste have been collected from displacement areas and camps in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, al-Qarara, al-Zawayda, al-Nuseirat, and Rafah, and transported to emergency dumpsites. This is part of the solid waste primary collection and transfer project in the southern areas, which is implemented through UNDP/PAPP by private sector and under the supervision of the JSC KRM. Additionally, regular maintenance of the JSC KRM fleet is carried out at a rate of 20 vehicles per month, that used for solid waste collection and transferring, to ensure the continuity of services despite the current conditions.
The JSC KRM, in collaboration with international donors and local partners, is working diligently to alleviate the hardships faced by IDPs in the southern governorates despite the limited resources and capacities due to the high volume of waste generated daily in southern Gaza and the inability to access the main Fukhari landfill.
