Minister of Local Government inaugurates the Al-Fukhari (Sofa) sanitary Landfill

The Minister of Local Government, Mr. Magdi Al Saleh, inaugurated the sanitary waste dump (Sofa) on Wednesday 12 June 2019, in the presence of HE the Minister of Development Eng. Ashraf al-Saadawi, and the governor of Khan Yunis d. Ahmed Al-Shaibi, the Governor of Rafah, Mr. Ahmed Abul-Nasr, the Consul General of the Republic of France, Mr. Pierre Koucard, the Head of Delegation of the European Union Mr. Ralph Tarraf, the World Bank Representative Mr. Bioron Philippe and the Chairman of the Board of the Joint Services Council for Solid Waste Management in Khan Yunis, Rafah and Central. Aladdin Al-Batah, and the Director General of the Fund for Development and Lending of Local Authorities. Tawfiq al-Badiri.

In his speech to the Palestinian people, Al-Saleh said that this vital and strategic project comes within the insistence of the Palestinian government and successive governments on making life and hope for the future. He pointed out that this project will serve more than 800,000 people, In the Gaza Strip implemented through the Development Fund and lending to local bodies and the total value of the program amounted to 32 million dollars in addition to the contribution of the Palestinian government, and was designed with the latest scientific and technical methods, where he began work 5 years ago, and put in front of dozens of obstacles and However, the insistence and commitment contributed to the implementation of the project in order to provide our people with advanced service in the field of waste disposal and to maintain a healthy and clean environment, and to preserve groundwater and ensure that it is not contaminated.

During the ceremony, representatives of the project's donor institutions thanked all those who contributed to the implementation of this project for outstanding work performance. The environmental and social standards were complied with during the project implementation process, as well as the ability to overcome the challenges and difficulties encountered during previous periods.

It is worth mentioning that the project for the construction of the Al-Fukhari (Sofa) sanitary Landfill is part of the infrastructure component of the solid waste management program in the Gaza Strip. It is implemented by Municipal Development and Lending Fund (MDLF) for the Joint Services Council for solid waste management in Khan Younis, Rafah and Middle Area (JSC-KRM), Financed by The World Bank Groups, The French Development Agency and the European Union.
